چکیده
The three features in this Update address three pressing issues of sustainability: eco-efficiency of built infrastructure (p 1); the peak oil debate (p 11); and the possible impacts of climate change (p 12). Such topics are generally discussed separately but, when considered together, they suggest a future in which the need for adaptation – of technologies, societal structures, and lifestyles – will be far greater than commonly acknowledged by political and industrial leaders. In a nutshell: This feature explores the application of eco-efficiency principles to transport, energy and water infrastructure, highlighting how more may be achieved with reduced consumption of resources, and providing examples of innovations. The focus is on materials, energy, water and land associated with construction and maintenance of physical infrastructure, such as highways, power plants and transmission lines, water supply, drainage, and sewage systems – factors that are all-too-often neglected during infrastructure decisions. Greater understanding is also needed of the differences between developed and developing countries. In the latter, the resource-and capital-intensive models traditionally used in the west, involving large, centralised plant and extensive distribution systems, are often inappropriate. The answer is more likely to lie in localised, small-scale, infrastructure solutions that empower

Analysis of the energy and environmental efficiency of the transportation sector under the constraints of energy consumption and environmental pollutions in Iran
Economic growth has caused some environmental problems such as energy shortage and environmental pollution. In this regard, in the present study, the analysis of a fixed-sum energy and environmental efficiency to achieve sustainable efficiency in the transport sector of Iran under the limitation of energy consumption and environmental pollution using the Common equilibrium efficient frontier da...
متن کاملTowards Sustainable Urban Transportation Case Studies
Climate change is one of the greatest environmental, economic, and social challenges of our time. Urban transportation has had a major negative impact on our environment—most of our air pollution comes from transport. This paper explores ways to move toward a more sustainable transport system by focusing on creating a more efficient and livable city and improving the environmental efficiency of...

The EIP definition proposed by the Indigo Development Team in 1993 has been widely accepted, which is “An eco-industrial park or estate is a community of manufacturing and service businesses located together on a common property” (Lowe, 2001). Cote & Hall (1995) suggested that an eco-industrial park, an industrial system could conserve natural and economic resources, reduce costs and debts incu...
